"Stare Selo" is the first rural museum of architecture and everyday life in Transcarpathia, which introduces the 300-year history of the life of the Verkhovyna people. The Skansen presents cultural monuments of different times and different segments of the population, both by social status (poor, middle peasants, officials), and by type of activity (shepherds, loggers, millers, shoemakers, etc.), as well as by ethnographic section (Lemkos, Boykos, Hutsuls).
The "Stare Selo" museum has almost three dozen buildings and auxiliary economic structures, several separate thematic expositions. The collection of peasant estates made of wooden structures is represented by: a typical hut of a poor peasant with barns for cattle and small livestock, huts of a shepherd, weaver, shoemaker, carpenter, sableman, hut-steamer, house of the village headman (village headman), and Soviet-era dwellings. The administrative and industrial infrastructure of the village is represented by a parish school, a government gendarmerie with a prison, a manual shack, a forge, a mill, Jewish taverns and a "buzhnaya" (church), a sawmill, a beekeeping, a well, and the Egan-Olbracht coffee house-museum. In addition, the museum complex houses separate expositions: "Carpathian Ukraine", "Kolochava Mystetskaya"; monuments to the opryshku Shugai, the leader of the UPA R. Shukhevych and the sculptural compositions "Shabbatna goska", "Kolochavka", "Pearl preciotsinnoe" (manuscript). Near the "buzhny" there are matzevs to Jewish kohens.
The total number of excursion objects is almost 60 units and 20 attractions (see the map of the Museum complex).
The museum complex "Stare Selo Kolochava" at the All-Ukrainian competition of public museums, which was held in December 2009 at the initiative of the National Union of Local History Scholars of Ukraine, in the nomination "Traditions and customs of my small homeland" was recognized as the best and received first place among public museums of Ukraine. And in 2016, the museum complex "Stare Selo Kolochava" won in the nomination "Architectural value" in the competition: "10 tourist values of Transcarpathia".
Kolochava Open-Air Museum is a treasury of the ethnographic heritage of the Boykos, Lemkos and Hutsuls. And it is no coincidence, because Kolochava, according to historical and local history research, is located at the intersection of the historical borders of these cultures.
In March, the Kolochava Museum-Open-Air Museum "Stare Selo" is drowned in purple flowers. Every spring, a unique natural phenomenon is observed here - a rare plant blooms en masse - Heyfel's Saffron. Usually, the first flowers in the "Crocus Valley" appear in early March and bloom en masse by early April. Heyfel's Saffron is on the verge of extinction. It is listed in the Red Book of Ukraine. In Kolochava, the flower is under close supervision and carefully protected.
On the territory of the "Stare Selo" museum there is also the "Kolochava Narrow Gauge" museum, "Steyer Bunker (UPA)" and "Kolochava Bokorash", so you will have the opportunity to visit four museums at once using one entrance ticket.
